This rumor has a history
- Sept–Oct 2014: a 40-day absence, later explained by ankle surgery.
- April 2020: after he skipped the Day of the Sun, "brain dead" reports went global; he reappeared 20 days later at a fertilizer plant opening.
- October 2026: a social-media claim travelled through UK and US tabloids while North Korean websites happened to be offline; state media then released exhibition-visit photos.
The common thread is Pyongyang's silence. The regime never discusses the leader's health, so a few days out of sight is enough for speculation to run.
How it actually gets verified
- KCNA and Rodong Sinmun "on-site guidance" reports with dated photos, usually the morning after the event.
- South Korea's National Intelligence Service briefing to parliament; in 2020 it was the first to say "no unusual activity".
- Satellite imagery of Pyongyang and his Wonsan train (38 North, Beyond Parallel).
- "Leaked intelligence" forwarded on messaging apps is almost always fake. No source link, no credibility.
What happens if he does die
Succession (Kim Yo Jong, his daughter Kim Ju Ae), the military's posture and China's reaction become the variables. In the 2020 scare the KOSPI recovered within a day. If an official confirmation ever comes, this page and the KTI update within the hour.
